Food Allergies

Common food allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur when sensitized people are exposed to the allergen. Symptoms include hives, lip/tongue swelling, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and vomiting. In our office, we can do a blood test that can help us confirm whether your child is allergic to a certain food. Skin prick testing, which is done by an allergist, is another option. The first-line treatment for severe allergic reactions is epinephrine. It is extremely important that 2 doses of epinephrine are kept with children who have food allergies at all times. All caregivers should know when and how to use it.

Allergic Rhinitis

Seasonal (to allergens such as grass and trees) and perennial (to allergens such as dust mites, pet dander and mold) allergies are common. Symptoms include coughing, runny nose, sneezing, and watery/itchy eyes. When necessary, like with food allergies, we can perform a blood test to identify what your child is allergic to, or we can refer to an allergist for skin prick testing. We will review your child’s symptoms and come up with the best treatment plan.
